It’s 11pm. Someone is on your online shop with a product in their basket and one small question. Does it come in a medium? Will it arrive before Saturday? Can they return it if it doesn’t fit? Your team is asleep, the contact form promises a reply “within one working day”, and the customer does what customers do. They close the tab and buy it somewhere that answered.
That gap between a question and an answer is where a lot of online shops quietly lose sales. An AI chatbot for e-commerce closes it. Not the clunky button menus of a few years ago, but an assistant that actually understands what people ask and answers from your own products and policies, any time of day.
We build these for online shops in Malta and further afield, and we run one on our own website: the assistant in the corner of bison.studio is one of ours. So this isn’t theory. It’s what we’ve learned putting them in front of real customers.
What does an AI chatbot do for an online shop?
In short, it answers the questions your team answers every day, instantly and in the customer’s own words, and it knows when to pass the conversation to a person. Here’s what that covers in practice:
- Product questions. Sizes, materials, ingredients, compatibility, what’s in the box. “Is this dress true to size?” “Will this charger work with my phone?”
- Delivery, returns and payments. Answered from your actual policies, not guesses. Delivery to Gozo, return windows, payment options, gift wrapping.
- Recommendations. “I need a birthday gift for my dad who loves cooking.” A good assistant asks one sensible question, then suggests products and links straight to them.
- Order questions. When it’s connected to your shop, it can tell a customer where their order is, after checking it’s really them.
- Requests your team should see. Wholesale enquiries, custom orders, corporate gifts. It collects the details and sends them to you, so a lead at midnight is waiting in your inbox in the morning.
- Handing over to a person. Complaints, refunds, anything sensitive or unusual goes to your team, with the conversation attached.
What’s the difference between a good chatbot and an annoying one?
We’ve all met the annoying one. Four buttons that don’t match your question, “Sorry, I didn’t understand that”, and a loop that ends with you hunting for a phone number. That kind of bot costs you goodwill instead of saving you time.
A good AI shopping assistant behaves very differently:
- It’s trained on your shop, not the whole internet. Your products, your policies, your FAQs. When your delivery times change, its answers change too.
- It’s honest when it doesn’t know. This is the big one. A good assistant says “I’m not sure, let me get someone from the team” instead of inventing a delivery date or a discount you never offered.
- It hands over properly. The customer shouldn’t have to repeat themselves. Your team gets the whole conversation and picks up where the assistant stopped.
- It sounds like you. Playful, formal, straight to the point. The tone should match your brand, not a call centre script.
- It keeps it short. Two or three sentences and a link to the right product beat an essay every time.
- It knows its limits. No medical advice from a supplements shop, no legal opinions, no promises your team can’t keep.
How does an AI shopping assistant connect to Shopify or WooCommerce?
The assistant is only as good as what it knows, so the connection to your shop matters more than the chat window itself. Whether you’re on Shopify, WooCommerce or a custom build, the setup usually looks like this:
- Your catalogue. It reads your products, variants, stock and prices from the shop, so it doesn’t recommend something that sold out last week.
- Your policies and pages. Delivery, returns, warranty, care instructions and FAQs become part of what it knows.
- Order lookups, done safely. If you want it to answer “where’s my order?”, it checks the order number against the customer’s email before saying anything, so nobody can fish for someone else’s details.
- Handover to your team. Requests and conversations it can’t finish land in your inbox, CRM or helpdesk, wherever your team already works.
- The chat window. Designed to fit your brand and your site, and tested on mobile, where many of your shoppers are.
If you’re still choosing a platform, our e-commerce team builds on Shopify, WooCommerce and custom code, and plans the AI side from day one rather than bolting it on later.
What do you need to prepare?
Less than you’d think, but what you do prepare makes a real difference to how good the assistant is:
- Clean product information. Proper descriptions, sizes, materials and specs. If your product pages are thin, the assistant’s answers will be too. Fixing this helps your SEO as well.
- Clear policies. Delivery areas and times (Malta, Gozo, abroad), returns, exchanges and payment options, written down in one place.
- The questions you get every week. Your inbox and DMs are the best training material there is. Collect the questions your team is tired of answering.
- Handover rules. Which topics go to a person, who receives them, and what the assistant should say outside working hours.
- Your tone of voice. How you talk to customers, and the things the assistant must never say or promise.
What about GDPR and the EU AI Act?
A chatbot talks to your customers and sometimes collects their details, so it has to be set up properly. Nothing exotic, just the basics done well:
- Tell people it’s an AI. Under the EU AI Act, people should know when they’re talking to an AI. Calling your bot “Sarah from customer care” is a bad idea for trust and for compliance.
- Explain what you store. Your privacy policy should say what happens to chat conversations, why you keep them and for how long.
- Only ask for what you need. A name and email to follow up, yes. Card numbers, passwords and ID numbers, never.
- Check your providers. Read how the AI provider handles your data, and choose terms that don’t use your customers’ conversations to train their models.
- Keep people in charge. Refunds, complaints and anything with real consequences should be decided by your team.
Is an AI chatbot worth it for a small shop?
Honest answer: it depends on your questions. If your team answers the same questions over and over, if your products need explaining (sizes, ingredients, compatibility), or if a good share of your visitors shop in the evening, an assistant will earn its keep quickly.
If you sell a handful of simple products and rarely get asked anything, start with better product pages instead. A chatbot isn’t a replacement for a good shop. It’s what makes a good shop feel attended to at every hour.
And it doesn’t have to stop at the chat. The same AI can follow up with the leads it collects, send your newsletters and plan your social media. We wrote about that in AI marketing automation: one system instead of five apps.
Key takeaways
- An AI chatbot for e-commerce answers product, delivery and returns questions instantly, recommends products and collects requests for your team, day and night.
- The good ones are trained on your own products and policies, admit when they don’t know and hand over to a person with the full conversation.
- It connects to Shopify, WooCommerce or a custom shop, so stock, prices and orders stay accurate.
- Prepare clean product data, clear policies, your most common questions and your tone of voice.
- Tell customers it’s an AI, explain what you store, and keep people in charge of refunds and complaints.
Frequently asked questions
Can an AI chatbot answer questions about my products accurately?
Yes, when it’s trained on your own product data and kept in sync with your shop. It answers from your descriptions, stock and policies, and a well-built assistant says so when it isn’t sure instead of guessing.
Will an AI chatbot replace my customer service team?
No. It takes the repetitive questions off your team’s plate and answers them at any hour. Complaints, refunds, unusual orders and anything sensitive still go to a person, with the conversation attached.
Does an AI chatbot work with Shopify and WooCommerce?
Yes. It can connect to Shopify, WooCommerce or a custom-built shop to read products, stock and prices, and to look up orders safely when you want it to.
Can the chatbot answer in Maltese and other languages?
Modern AI models understand and reply in many languages, so customers can write in English, Maltese, Italian or whatever they’re comfortable with. We test it with real questions from your customers before it goes live.
Is an AI chatbot GDPR compliant?
It can be, if it’s set up properly: people are told they’re talking to an AI, your privacy policy explains what’s stored and for how long, it only asks for the details it needs, and your AI provider’s terms protect your customers’ data.
How long does it take to set up an AI chatbot for an online shop?
It depends on the size of your catalogue and what it needs to connect to, such as order lookups or your helpdesk. We map it out with you in a free consultation and give you a clear plan before anything is built.
See one in action
The quickest way to understand an AI chatbot is to talk to one. Ask the assistant in the corner of this page anything about Bison, our work or your own shop, and see how it handles it.
