MPO Kids
MPO Kids is the Malta Philharmonic Orchestra’s education initiative, created to make orchestral music fun and accessible for children. The orchestra needed a digital home for the project that would feel playful to kids, useful to parents and teachers, and true to a national institution.
Making an orchestra exciting for a seven-year-old
Orchestral music has a reputation problem with children: it feels formal, distant and grown-up.
The MPO wanted a space where kids could explore instruments, watch concerts, play quizzes and get to know the orchestra at their own pace. The content had to work in English and Maltese, in the classroom and on the sofa, and it had to hold a child’s attention without talking down to them.
Behind the fun, the site also had to serve the orchestra’s educational goals and grow with new programmes, videos and activities over time.
Our Approach
Characters, colour and play at the centre of the experience
We built the site around MPO Kids’ cast of colourful characters and a bold, bright visual language that feels closer to a game than a concert programme. A Watching Station organises the orchestra’s video library by theme, from chamber concerts and film music to Maltese composers and opera, while interactive quizzes let children test what they have learned about instruments and sounds.
The Orchestra Map, the Sounds Like Me section and a simple registration form give the project room to expand, and the whole experience is built to be tapped, swiped and sung along to on tablets and phones.
The Outcome
A digital playground for the next generation of music lovers
MPO Kids gives the Malta Philharmonic Orchestra a platform that extends its education work far beyond the concert hall. It introduces children to the orchestra in a language they understand, gives parents and teachers ready-made activities, and lays the foundation for new programmes as the initiative grows.
